Red Shoes

by Rhina P. Espaillat

I bought red shoes the other day.
They were on sale, which can’t excuse
purchasing something so outré.
I bought red shoes, knowing they’re likely to confuse
people who’ve known me day to day
for the strict ways and quiet views

of those who seldom go astray
or turn up in the precinct news.
But then again, who knows? I may.
I bought red shoes.
