Submission Requirements

We want to read your writing. Having said, that, there are some guidelines.

When is our reading period? Craft essays are accepted year-round. We run quarterly calls for submissions for fiction, non-fiction and poetry through Submittable.

What do we want to see?

  • Your best work.
  • We encourage underrepresented voices to submit their work for consideration, including but not limited to: Black individuals, Indigenous persons, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA community, and disabled writers. We are aware that you are not voiceless, but there are systemic issues in publishing that limit the ability for your voices to be heard.
  • If a piece is republished in the future when it originally appeared in our literary magazine, you agree to acknowledge that the short story, essay or poem first appeared on CausewayLit.

What do you not want to see?

  • Previously published pieces.
  • Pieces that depict gratuitous violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and hate speech.
  • Pieces from currently enrolled Fairfield University MFA students. FUMFA Alumni may submit work a year after their graduation.
  • Your name on the submission. All of our submissions are considered anonymously; if your name appears anywhere on the manuscript, you’ll get an email from us saying we can’t consider your work. You may resubmit, but only if the reading period has not closed.
  • New pieces from a contest winner within a year of having won.
  • Emails with submissions. We only accept submissions through submittable.

Do I get paid? Each quarter, our editors select the best piece in each genre, and not only publish the work, but pay them $50. We reserve the right not to pick a winner for a category if the submissions for said period are not up to CausewayLit’s standards. If this is the case, the following period of submissions for that category will be free.

When will I hear something? The usual response time is about 12 to 14 weeks from the date of submission.

Do you accept simultaneous submissions? Of course. Just let us know ASAP if it’s accepted somewhere else. You can “withdraw” the piece and leave us a note on submittable. And, congratulations.
